Your garage
door is what allows you easy access to your garage. Without it, getting in and
out would be much more difficult and you could not fit in large objects such as
your vehicle and lawn care equipment. Garage doors are very durable things, but
the constant use of them in combination with the cold temperatures of fall and
winter can take a toll on them. So, we need to do our best to prepare them for
the fall and minimize damage to them. Things you can do include:
- Replace Weatherstripping: The weatherstripping
on the bottom of your door provides an airtight seal where the door and the
ground meet. Over time, it wears out, rodents might chew it, and it gets
damaged. Check it before the fall months and replace it as needed.
- Clean Off the Roof & Gutters: The roof and
gutters of your garage help direct moisture away from the garage. If the roof is
full of debris and the gutters are clogged, water will make its way toward the
door and cause some issues.
- Seal the Garage Floor: Your garage floor can be
damaged by cold weather, rain, and the occasional snow. Sealing your floor will
protect it from the elements and allow you to clean anything on the floor more
easily. It also acts as a protective barrier that repels water and other
debris, protecting the entirety of the garage.
- Insulate the Garage: The cold can be quite damaging
to your door. If there is any moisture inside your garage, it can cause it to
freeze your door and compromise its integrity. Insulate your garage to help
keep your garage warm.
- Lubricate Moving Parts: The metal and moving
parts on your garage door can become brittle from the cold. The constant
contact and usage in the cold increases the likelihood of parts getting
damaged. Lubricate moving parts to keep the door functioning smoothly and protect
against moisture.
- Clear Roller Tracks: The roller tracks are
infamous for getting clogged with dirt, dust, pet hair, leaves, snow, and other
debris. These things make it difficult to open and close the door and damage
the rollers. Clear the tracks to allow the door to open and close easily and
prevent damage to the rollers.
